How to Approach a Foundation: From Initial Contact to Getting Funded
with a special Dialogue with Donors

Akron, OH

Thursday, October 9, 2008
10:00am - 12:00pm

This class, intended for fundraisers with some experience under their belts, will teach you how to initiate contact with potential funders, plan calls and meetings, prepare for site visits, and build partnerships with donors.

This program will also give attendees an opportunity to meet, learn from, and talk to area grantmakers, including:

  • Paul Kunce, program officer, Akron Community Foundation - Upon completion of graduate studies from Kent State University, Mr. Kunce joined Akron-based Brennan Learning Services, working on adult basic literacy and education reform initiatives. Two years later, he accepted a position with Inventure Place, home of the National Inventors Hall of Fame. After a five-year stint at the Inventors Hall, he worked in commercial sales in the Cleveland area; then in 2004, he returned to Summit County and the charitable sector as a Program Officer at Akron Community Foundation. His responsibilities there include community outreach and ascertainment, project management and overall grantmaking facilitation with area nonprofits.

  • Julie Rittenhouse, program officer, GAR Foundation - Ms. Rittenhouse joined the GAR Foundation in July 2008 with nine years of philanthropic experience in Cleveland that included strategic initiatives, special projects, program management and evaluation. Ms. Rittenhouse is a Lecturer at Cleveland State University’s Maxine Goodman Levin College of Urban Studies. She previously managed community development and leadership training projects at the Levin College and has consulted on affordable housing initiatives.
