Fundraising for Higher Education:
A Resource List

Colleges and universities need to examine best practices in fundraising and emerging trends as they seek funding from alumni, foundations, and corporations. This resource list contains citations to selected works from the Foundation Center's bibliographic database, Catalog of Nonprofit Literature, for advancement professionals and staff members involved in fundraising for higher education. General Guidebooks

Henson, Kenneth T. Grant Writing in Higher Education: A Step-by-Step Guide. Boston, MA: Pearson Education, 2003. ix, 226 p. Call Number: 770 HEN.

A practical guide for educators that covers the various aspects of proposal writing. Describes three winning proposals from the author and explains lessons he learned. Emphasizes the importance of using questionnaires and literature to support proposals. Appendix contains sample documents including a proposal and budget.

Phelan, Joseph F. A Dynamic Foundation for Fund Raising: A Guide to Organizing or Reorganizing an Institutionally Related Foundation. Washington, DC: Council for Advancement and Support of Education, 2004. xiv, 160 p. Call Number: 570 PHE.
According to the author, there are probably more than 4,000 affiliated foundations in the nation today, providing support for universities, museums, hospitals, and other nonprofit organizations. The practice most likely first occurred with the establishment of the Kansas University Endowment Association in 1891. The book explains the process of creating an affiliated foundation, from devising a mission and governance structures to planning. The appendices contain documents and forms from the Wright State University Foundation, with which the author has been affiliated.

A comprehensive manual specifically for institutions of higher education. Covers both the theoretical underpinnings of the annual appeal, as well as the practical methods for a successful outcome. Includes glossary and bibliography.

This sequel to Educational Fund Raising (1993) discusses the impact of recent trends in demographics, globalization, technology, and business thinking on institutional advancement. Elaborates on individual giving, fundraising from corporations and foundations, traditions of giving, strategies for various types of institutions, collaboration with different departments, as well as the development profession. Includes a new chapter on benchmarking, accountability and performance measurement.

Presents data on nearly 14,000 companies and subsidiaries that match employee gifts to nonprofits, such as educational institutions and arts organizations. Includes a subsidiary-parent company index.


Surveys and Reports

Cascione, Gregory L. Philanthropists in Higher Education: Institutional, Biographical, and Religious Motivations for Giving. New York, NY: RoutledgeFalmer, 2003. viii, 165 p. Call Number: 458 CAS.
In this monograph, the author delves into the factors that influence and motivate donors to give to institutions of higher learning, asking specifically what role religion might play in the lives of philanthropists. Having conducted field research interviews with major donors, Cascione ruminates on the nature of generosity, and provides advice to both donors and fundraisers.

Elliott, Deni. The Kindness of Strangers: Philanthropy and Higher Education. Lanham, MD: Rowman & Littlefield Publishers Inc, 2006. viii, 189 p. Call Number: 403 ELL.
Elliott provides her analysis of the situation in higher education advancement today: competitive, professional, and wrestling with ethical questions that are often related to donor expectations. With bibliographical references.

Annual report of voluntary giving to colleges, universities, and private elementary and secondary schools. Voluntary support includes donations from individuals, foundations, corporations, religious organizations, and other nongovernmental givers. Book is divided into sections, including survey results, summary tables, and institutional data. Provides detailed analysis and numerous tables.

Lawrence, Steven; Marino, Leslie. Update on Funding for Higher and Graduate Educational Institutions. New York, NY: Foundation Center, 2003. 4 p.
Provides a brief examination of foundation funding for higher education from 1997 to 2002.

Willmer, Wesley Kenneth (ed.) Advancing Small Colleges: A Benchmarking Survey Update. Washington, DC: Council for Advancement and Support of Education, 2008. 135 p. Call Number: 703 WIL ADV.
Analyzes the results of an updated survey of 274 members of the Council of Independent Colleges, the fifth such survey on advancement activities since 1976. Findings from the current study reflect information from the fiscal year 2004-2005, which is compared against data from earlier surveys. Issues covered include trustees' and presidents' roles in advancement, raising funds, integrated marketing, alumni relations, and other topics.

Alumni Giving

Fernandez, Kim. "Banding Together." Currents, vol. 34 (March 2008): p. 28-32, 34-5.
A discussion of the benefits yielded by university fundraising professionals partnering with alumni associations during campaigns. Since alumni relations staff tend to be especially familiar with their institution’s network of graduates, they can be extremely helpful in identifying and approaching prospective donors among each graduating class. Many alumni officers, meanwhile, feel that alumni associations should never be involved in fundraising campaigns.

Logue, Ann C. "Close Partners or Strange Bedfellows? Does the Annual Fund Belong in the Alumni Office?" Currents, vol. 32 (September 2006): p. 32-5, 37.
The author discusses the advantages and challenges of running the annual fund out of the alumni office, citing examples at several universities.

Public Universities

Lyons, Nancee L. "The Advancement Myths of Community Colleges." Currents, vol. 33 (November/December 2007): p. 24-9.
Addresses the myth that fundraising efforts in community colleges are likely to be unsuccessful due to weak alumni support and negative perceptions compared with four-year colleges. The article stresses the need to find nontraditional fundraising ideas, and provides commentary from community colleges that have been successful in their fundraising.

Matthews, Bruce. "First Seating." Currents, vol. 33 (April 2007): p. 32-8.
Discusses challenges and solutions for public universities that are embarking on their first capital campaign. Topics covered include promoting a philanthropic culture, developing a case for support, integrating athletics fundraising, and strengthening planned giving and major gifts programs.

Teitel, Martin. "Big Pond, Small Fish." Currents, vol. 33 (November/December 2007): p. 30-4.
A discussion of the obstacles that community colleges face in seeking funding, due to the misconception that the schools receive substantial government funding. Explores the issue of securing foundation support for community colleges.
