The John P. Murphy Foundation, whose Articles of Incorporation state that the Foundation will distribute its grants for "charitable, educational, scientific, literary and religious purposes," was established in November 1960. The incorporating members and trustees were John P. Murphy, his wife, Gladys T. Murphy, two long-term friends and legal counsels, Frank E. Joseph and Roger P. Brennan, and a trusted associate of many years, John Connell. On July 23, 1962, the Internal Revenue Service of the U.S. Treasury Department declared that the Foundation was a qualified 501(c)(3) organization.
