New York Library/Learning Center
STATEMENT OF PURPOSE
The Foundation Center's mission is to strengthen the nonprofit sector by advancing knowledge of U.S. philanthropy. The New York library/learning center is a private facility open to visitors seeking information related to philanthropy, fundraising, and nonprofit management. Staff members provide extensive reference assistance and training on related topics. The library/learning center is not intended to be used as an office, recreational area, or public space.
COMPUTER/INTERNET/E-MAIL POLICY
Use of computers is limited to research on philanthropy, fundraising, and nonprofit management. Visitors may not use computers to access or send e-mail, to visit general interest web sites, or for any other purpose unrelated to Foundation Center research.
Computers are available on a first come, first served basis. Computer time is available in increments of one hour to ensure fair and equitable access for all.
A maximum of 100 records may be saved to floppy disk or flash drive; exceeding this limit is a violation of copyright. CD-ROM storage is not available. Files may not be downloaded or saved to the hard drive or desktop. All files unnecessary to workstation operation are deleted on a regular basis.
E-mail is not available at public terminals. However, visitors without flash or floppy drives may obtain a disk from the reference librarian, cut and paste records into NotePad, download to the disk (A drive), and e-mail them from the computer at the reference desk.
Printing from computers requires a copy card, which can be purchased in increments of one dollar from the vending machine near the library entrance. The cost of printing from computers is 10 cents per page. A maximum of 100 records may be printed; exceeding this limit is a violation of copyright. Vending machines do not provide change, and change is not available at the reference desk or in the bookstore.
The library reserves the right to deny computer privileges to anyone who misuses the computer equipment or does not follow the established computer policies and procedures.
VISITOR CONDUCT POLICY
Visitors are expected to follow staff instructions and to treat staff and other library users with courtesy. Disruptive or threatening speech or conduct will not be tolerated.
No eating or drinking is permitted. Water fountains are available in the hall.
Cell phones must be turned off and used only near the phone bank or in the elevator area.
Visitors to the library are not permitted in any other part of the facility, including the training annex, breakout area, and computer lab, unless they are attending a public program or class and are accompanied by Foundation Center staff.
Conversations in the library should be brief, quiet, and work-related.
Clothing should be appropriate for a place of business; shoes must be worn at all times.
Appropriately trained companion animals for people with disabilities are allowed, but must remain on the floor and be leashed and supervised at all times and in all areas. Companion animals may not be fed on the premises.
Bags and other personal possessions may not be left unattended. They must be stored at the visitor's assigned workstation and must not block aisles. Over-sized items such as large pieces of luggage and shopping carts are not allowed in the library.
Failure to adhere to these policies will result in visitors being prohibited from using the library.
We appreciate your cooperation and look forward to helping you learn more about philanthropy.
