Meet the Grantmakers — Trends in Funding for Operating Support: The Grantmaker's Perspective

Recently the University of San Francisco's Institute for Nonprofit Management issued a report, Practices and Policies of California Foundations in Supporting Grantees' General Operating Costs. This session features findings from the report provided by the author and commentary from a panel of Bay Area funders on trends and practices within their own institutions pertaining to unrestricted funding. Topics covered include: number of foundations providing general operating support, type of foundations most likely to provide general operating support, why foundations decide to provide unrestricted grants, and how nonprofits can position their requests for general operating support dollars.

The speakers were Carol Silverman, director of research, Institute on Nonprofit Management; Fatima Angeles, director of evaluation and organizational learning, the California Wellness Foundation; and Ron Rowell, program officer, social justice, the San Francisco Foundation. The talk was moderated by Janet Camarena, director, Foundation Center-San Francisco.

Reality Grantmaking: Health and Human Services Special Edition

You've experienced reality TV; now get ready for "Reality Grantmaking." At this session, which the Foundation Center cosponsored with Development Executives Roundtable and the Association of Fundraising Professionals—Golden Gate Chapter, participants witnessed the decision-making process as a panel of real grantmakers reviewed proposals submitted by health and human service organizations. Applicants were screened by the session moderators and nine finalists were selected. Watch as their proposals are reviewed and scored by real-world funders. The agency with the highest score won a cash grant at the end of the workshop.

The event was moderated by Cheryl Clarke and Susan Fox, fundraising consultants. The speakers were Mary Gregory, program officer, Pacific Foundation Services; Damon Scott, contributions manager-northern California region, Community Benefit, Kaiser Permanente; Michele Williams, community development program fellow, San Francisco Foundation; and Dianne Yamashiro-Omi, senior program officer, The California Endowment.
