Local and National Funders Support DC Nonprofits for Education Reform
The Collaborative for Education Organizing (CEO) recently awarded $725,000 in grants to support five Washington, DC nonprofit organizations addressing the city's public education restructuring.
CEO is a cooperative effort of the Community Foundation for the National Capital Region and a coalition of other funders dedicated to doubling the numbers of college-ready graduates in The District.
Along with the Community Foundation,CEO members include a number of local grantmakers, such as the Eugene and Agnes E. Meyer Foundation and the Morris and Gwendolyn Cafritz Foundation, along with large national funders like the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, the World Bank, and Fannie Mae.
At the core of CEO's approach is the belief that systemic organizing of low-income youth and families is an essential part of influencing public and charter school programs, as well as policies that impact the academic and social development of children of color. In addition, CEO believes that organizing is essential to ensuring that changes are implemented and sustained.
The CEO grants were given to groups that advocate for language access, research high school dropout rates, and mobilize parents, students, and school activisits. The five grant recipients are:
