Mission:
Samaritan Inns' mission is to provide structured housing and rehabilitative services in an environment of support and accountability that will give homeless and addicted women and men the opportunity to rebuild their lives.
Background:
Beginning in 1985 with nine homeless men in a transitional living house called an "Inn," Samaritan Inns soon focused on recovery from addictions as a strategy for helping homeless persons transform their lives. In its first decade, Samaritan Inns developed a three-phase employment-oriented Recovery Continuum. Between 1997 and 2000, the organization doubled its overall service capacity and now serves 550 men and women annually.
Current Programs:
Samaritan Inns' signature program is its Recovery Continuum that helps homeless addicts to move from life on the streets to "homeownership." Each successive step in this Recovery Continuum promotes greater independence and responsibility. The Recovery Continuum has three phases as follows:
- Phase 1 - A 28-day Intensive Recovery Program where residents address the root causes of their homelessness, learn recovery skills, and receive group and individual addictions counseling.
- Phase 2 - A six-month Transitional Living Program where residents practice living out a recovery lifestyle, seek jobs and work in the community while sharing housing in one of five transitional homes.
- Phase 3 - The Affordable Housing Communities where residents live in communal apartments as they reinforce their recovery lifestyles with increasing responsibility and independence.
Funding Needs:
Samaritan Inns' funding needs include general operating support, capacity building grants, and capital improvement grants for its eight properties.
