Mission:
The 9/11 Airport Worker Resource Center (AWRC) provides assistance to individuals who worked at Reagan National Airport and, as a result of the events of 9/11, are unemployed or underemployed. The goal of the center is to bring together regional employers, government entities and local nonprofit employment and training service providers to efficiently serve displaced workers.
Background:
The 9/11 Airport Worker Resource Center is supported by a grant from the September 11th Fund
. The September 11th Fund was established by the United Way of New York City and The New York Community Trust to help respond to the immediate and long term needs of victims, families and communites affected by the events of September 11th, 2001. Through the September 11th Fund, the Ongoing Recovery Program was established to assist communities still feeling the effects of 9/11.
Current Programs:
The 9/11 Airport Worker Resource Center is a joint project between the AFL-CIO Working for America Institute (WAI) , the AFL-CIO Community Services Agencies (CSA), and Workforce Organizations for Regional Collaboration (WORC). In a collaborative effort, the center was established to assist airport workers, union and non-union, whose jobs were impacted by the events of 9/11. It allows airport workers to visit one centralized location and access a simple, streamlined, user-friendly system to obtain assistance. Open from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm, the center includes personnel from service providers and government agencies throughout the Washington DC region so that individuals can access employment opportunites, education and training programs, financial assistance and other ancillary services.
At the present time, no funding has been made available for individuals employed at Dulles or BWI airports. There is also no assistance available for persons who were employed in the hospitality/tourism industry in the surrounding area.
